A Review of the First Six Plagues
    Reminders:
    - All ten plagues were in rapid succession.
    - The Israelites were uninvolved.
    - God has hardened Pharaoh’s heart.
    - God ‘marvelously separated’ His people.
    - Pharaoh is a type of Satan.
    - The Exodus is a picture of the gospel.
    - God is glorified in showing mercy, but also in bringing judgement.

Six Impressive Truths from the Plagues
    1. Pharaoh’s hard heart - oh, how we need the mercy of God so that our sin will not harden us.
    2. Pharaoh’s false repentance - true repentance has nothing to appeal to except the mercy of God.
    3. The Israelite’s non-involvement - we should stand in awe of all God has done for us, without us.
    4. The LORD separating His people - the LORD has ‘marvelously separated’ us from judgement.
    5. The sheer power of God - He can use anything to bring utter destruction to a nation/people.
    6. The oppression of Satan against God’s people - Christ has secured a way out of sin’s slavery.

GOOD THEOLOGY is the best cure for FEAR
TRUTH is the best cure for FEAR
BELIEVING LIES is the best cause for FEAR

    Truths of a Fear-Proof Worldview
    Lie #1:
    I am alone, unseen, unassisted;
and what I do/say for Christ is meaningless.

    Truth #1:
Everything hidden will come into the light,
and those “in Christ” will be vindicated.

    Lie #2:
The seen is more powerful than the unseen.
The body is more important than the soul.
The temporary is more valuable than the eternal.

    Truth #2:
Those who have a faith-filled fear of God,
    that produces obedience…
    need fear nothing else.

    Lie #3:
I am insignificant to a far-off, invisible God.

    Truth #3:
God’s care for you is as a Father who knows how to love perfectly.

    Lie #4:
Even if God cares for me, He is not actually able to keep me from harm.

    Truth #4:
There is not one tiny corner of creation that is not cared for and controlled by my Father.

...we will someday see what is now hidden.

Matthew 10 - Jesus tells His disciples...What to Expect

How were Jesus’ disciples strengthened from His teaching in vs. 16-25?
    1. They knew going in what the true cost of following Jesus would be.
    2. They were able to embrace the tension of...going in the strength of the LORD,...and going in the vulnerability of sheep.
    3. They were forced to see themselves as dispensable parts of a whole.
    4. They could know that the message they preach is true by the world’s response to it.
    5. This shows the power and the glory of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

    A Focus on FEAR
The New Man thinks: “I am sent by Christ, who has saved me freely, to fulfill a mission - His mission"
    - Fear breeds in those who are on a mission for themselves - that is Old Man thinking.
My mission is to serve the the King of Kings.
My motivation is because He loved me and died for me.

The New Man does not see his trust in God as an event, but as a lifestyle.
    - Fear breeds in those who trust in themselves.
    Think like a dependent being
    Pray like a dependent being
    - pray specific prayers
    - pray with praise and thanksgiving
    - pray for what God has already promised
    - pray for greater faith and boldness
Receive God’s word like a dependent being
    Obey like a dependent being
Focus on the object of your faith - which is Christ

The New Man sees the Gospel as the pearl of great price for which he will be willing to lose friends.
...for which he will preach a coming judgement.
...for which he is willing even to die.
    - Fear breeds in those who live for earthly things, which have far less value.

Comparing the Red Sea crossing To the Jordan River crossing

    Red Sea
Came after 400 years of slavery.
    Led them into the wilderness.
Took place 3 days after the Passover.
Pillar of Cloud went behind them.
They were commanded to stand still.
The water opened and then they went.
    Was a defensive maneuver.
    Their enemies were behind them.
It saved them from their enemies.
They were afraid of their enemies.
They left dead Egyptians on the bottom.
    They left their enemies behind.
    Were very afraid.

    Jordan River
Came after 40 years of judgement.
Led them into the Promised Land.
Took place 4 days before the Passover.
    The Ark went before them.
They were commanded to step in.
They went and then the water opened.
    Was an offensive maneuver.
    Their enemies were before them.
It enabled them to conquer their enemies.
Their enemies were afraid of them.
They left 12 stones on the bottom.
    They left themselves behind.
    Were strong and courageous.

    God’s solution for fear is...
    ... not a fix, a system, a technique, a plan to follow
... to kill it (to crucify it)
... by faith (to reckon that God’s truth is true)
    ... daily
... by losing all that is “mine”
... by taking hold of all that is His

    New Years Sermon - Fear

    A Focus on FEAR
    - Is our situation(s) today like the one we read?
    - Is our fear as evil as the fear of the Israelites?
    - Is all fear sin?
    - Why does some fear offend God so much?
    - Why does fear divide people?
    - What does the Bible really teach about fear?- How can we defeat fear that offends God?

    Goal:
    1. To see our fear from God’s perspective.
    2. To know what God has done for us and given to us, so that we need not be controlled by fear.
    3. To have a disciplined and sound mind that can think truthfully about fear.

    Defining Sinful Fear:
    - This is not directly about worry or anxiety.
    - The Bible speaks both compassionately and rebukingly about fear.
    - Not all fear is sin.
       - fear of God
       - appropriate concern and precautions
       - respect for danger
    - The powerful and often habitual focus on a perceived danger or loss that causes us to:
       - disobey God’s will for us.
       - not truly worship God as God.
       - not love Him properly or others.

Why is obeying our fear so evil?
Why does God hate it so much?
    - Fear is sin rooted in the human heart.
    - Fear is unbelief.
    - Fear is not trusting the God who redeemed me.
    - Fear is open rebellion against God.
    - Fear is attributing to God, characteristics that are not in His nature.
    - Fear is the belief that I could be a better god than the true God.

Four Reasons Why God Chose To Turn The Nile Into Blood
    1. For retribution for the Israelite infants thrown into the Nile.
    - God is a just God and will someday bring all evil to justice.
    - God’s people can trust him with vengeance, so we can focus on showing mercy.
    - God’s people are one people for all eternity.

    2. To expose the gods of Egypt and bring judgement upon them.
    - God has a way of exposing and bringing to nothing the “gods” we trust in as well.

    3. To foreshadow a plague yet to come.

    4. To show His own people that the LORD is fighting for them.

Exodus 6 God's Response to Moses
    Exodus 5:22-6:13, 6:28-7:7

If the LORD Himself were to strengthen your faith...
    1. He would point you to HIS OWN NATURE...and call you to believe in Him because of WHO HE IS.
    - Our faith is not the source of power. Our faith has an object. The object of our faith is our source of power. Therefore, the object of our faith is what we focus on to be strengthened in our faith.

    2. He would point to His covenant.
    - By always remembering His covenant with us in Christ, our hearts are encouraged and strengthened.

    3. He would point you to His promises.
    - Our eyes of faith are to be focused upon those things that God has promised HE WILL DO..., not on people around us, not on the enemy, not on our own deficiencies, not what we are called to do, but squarely on His nature and His promises.

    Nov 15, 2020
Carl Helmuth – The Whole Counsel of God – Exodus 5 Pharaoh’s Response
    Exodus 5 Pharaoh's Response

    Two Viewpoints:
    1. Pharaoh is a type of Satan who is the slave master of all who are slaves to sin
    2. Pharaoh as a king of the earth who oppresses God’s people

    1. Let’s consider a ‘what if’...
    - What if God had not hardened Pharaoh’s heart; and that he would have let the people go at this first request?

    - Then God would not have been glorified in bringing judgement upon him. - Then God would not have been able to show the riches of His glory to His elect people. - Then God’s people would not have learned to trust the LORD in the face of great suffering. - Then God would not have been able to teach His people to walk by faith in His word rather than faith in what they see and experience. - Then the rest of the world would not have feared the God of Israel as they left Egypt. - Then God would not have been able to teach His Church about Satan’s devices, and future ones like Jannes and Jambres. - Then we would not have this illustration of how God also delivers us from our slavery to sin by His sacrificial Passover Lamb.

    2. When God brings judgement onto the world, His people will become targets of the world’s anger.

    3. When God brings judgement onto the world, His people will be tempted to turn on each other.

    4. God’s people must, must, must, have a long view of justice.

Carl Helmuth – The Whole Counsel of God – Exodus 4 Understanding The God Of The OT (Part 3)
Exodus 4 Understanding The God Of The OT

9 Principles to Help Us Know, Understand, and Love the God of the OT

    5. God has a sovereign right to choose who will receive mercy and who will receive justice.
    God is the Judge.
Every man stands before Him guilty.
Justice requires that every man’s sentence is death.
It is the Judge’s decision if He will offer mercy, and to whom He will offer mercy.
In the OT, God chose to show mercy to Abraham and His descendants; but not to others.

    6. God’s glory is the single most important end for all of creation.
    - God is glorified in His compassion and mercy AND ALSO in His justice and wrath.
    - God is working for His own glory in everything that happens in the OT.
    - God’s glory in showing mercy is connected to His glory in showing wrath.
    - God’s glory in showing mercy to us is connected to His glory in showing wrath to His own Son.
    - If God can be glorified by showing wrath to His own Son, then He can also be glorified by showing wrath to evil men.
    - In the OT, God “seems” harsh because, in it He displays His wrath on mankind.
    - In the NT, God “seems” merciful because, in it He displays His wrath on His Son.
    - To align our lives with God’s purposes, we will need to forsake all others in order to be about God’s glory.
