    - The NT teaches this command.

    - God is our Provider.
    - Everything we have comes from Him.
    - We glorify Him when we trust Him to provide.

What does the ninth commandment say to those in the New Covenant?
    - The NT expands it to include only speaking words that will build others up.
    - We are “on the side of truth”.

    - We are to “speak the truth in love”
    - Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, the Life.

What does the tenth commandment say to those in the New Covenant?
    - The NT shows coveting to be the evil desires that cause every other sin.
    - Coveting is a sin of the heart that is idolatry.
    - It is desiring something else besides God.
    - Coveting is doubting that God is truly sufficient for all that we want or need.

The “Providence of God” View The “The Daily Life of a Believer” View God is our Healer, and Provider, and now our strength. This passage is a cross section of our own daily battle against the enemy. - We have an outer self (Joshua). - We have an inner self (Moses) united with Christ. - Both are wholly dependent upon the power of God. - God designed the Church so we have others to help us in our time of weakness.

The “Power of the Cross” View Through the cross of Christ, God has given His power to an army of His people.

Carl Helmuth – The Whole Counsel of God – Exodus 17 – Water From the Rock
Exodus 17 – Water From the Rock

What does it mean to test the Lord? 1. They grumbled ABOUT God, as if He wasn’t there. 2. They quarreled with God’s servants, asking the creature to supply what only the Creator can. 3. They tried God. They sat in the judge’s seat and saw God as the defendant, They demanded answers from God. 4. They were faithless, in spite of God’s faithfulness. 5. They were more concerned with their own “needs” than they were of God’s glory or purpose.

Water from the Rock was a Gospel foreshadowing. - Christ is the Rock (1 Corinthians 10:4). - He was “struck” in the place of His people. - He was struck by a man. - He was struck by God. - He was struck by the rod of judgment. - He was struck once. - From the Rock flowed the water of life. - The Spirit flows out to God’s people. - To flow from human hearts as a fountain of life.

    God’s Provision for His People

    Four Things To Remember

    1. There is a connection between Christ and bread. - He was born in Bethlehem (house of bread). - He multiplied bread to feed many in the wilderness. - He called Himself the Bread of Life (John 6:35). - He was recognized when He broke bread (Luke 24:30-31). - When He gave bread to Judas; Satan entered him. - His written Word is also compared to “bread”. - He is the Bread that unites all of God’s children into one loaf/body.

    2. How important it is for us to hearken to God’s word. - They treated the words of God with disregard. - They did not pay attention to the precise details. - They could not simply listen/obey God without: - first knowing the “why” behind it. - first relying on their own experience. - They proved by this that they did not really believe. God’s people are marked by their faith in what He says.

    3. There remains a Sabbath rest for us. - We rest from being slaves to sin. - We rest from our work to satisfy God’s commands. - We set aside a day a week to worship and fellowship. - We have an eternal “rest”. - a promise of an eternal “Promised Land”. Jesus Christ is our Sabbath Rest.

    4. The longsuffering mercy of God toward His people.

Five Areas of Learning from the OT 1. Learn the historical narrative. 2. See each passage in context of the “grand story of redemption”. 3. Learn about the greatness of our God. 4. Learn faith lessons from men of faith (or from men of no faith). 5. Types and Shadows of the Gospel and NT doctrines (or repeating themes).

Sins 1. They forgot God’s faithfulness in the past. 2. They forgot God’s powerful works in the past. 3. They are not trusting God...His goodness nor His promises. 4. They are trusting in themselves. 5. They have lost sight of the future God promised. 6. They attribute evil intentions to God/His servants. 7. They desire the comforts of Egypt over the plan of God.

The Testing of God 1. Will they trust that I am God? 2. Will they trust Me to provide all their needs? 3. Will they trust Me to DAILY supply their needs? 4. Will they trust that My provision is much better than what they had in Egypt? 5. Will they trust Me by listening carefully to My word? 6. Will they learn and grow from what I want to teach them through this?

Carl Helmuth – The Whole Counsel of God – Exodus 15 – God Meets Their First Need
    Four Takeaways from Exodus 15
God is the complete source of all that we need. - He defines what we need by what He wants
Our greatest need is to receive His revelation to us. - God’s children are marked by hearing His words.
God tests His people - to prove their faith. - to reveal genuine faith, and to strengthen it.
The faith we AFFIRM when we WORSHIP... ...we must APPLY when we WALK.

    Psalm 141
David prayed with an attitude of: - Desperation - from seeing his situation accurately. - Dependency - from seeing his own power accurately. - Being more concerned with the evil inside of him than the evil of the people around him. - Having a greater fear of God than of man. - God’s concerns came first – then his. David prayed for sanctification: - That the LORD would guard the words of his mouth. - By the grace of God. - That the LORD would not draw his heart to evil. (that He would restrain the evil within me) - Knowing he needed God’s grace inwardly. - Knowing that deeds come from the heart. - That the LORD would keep him from evil people and their worldly pleasures. - That he would not be associated with them. - That he would not love what they love. - That the LORD would use righteous men to “strike” him with loving correction, rather than be counted with the wicked.

Teachable Themes of Psalm 73 - God’s providence is constant, yet rarely understood by the human mind and reason. God’s people will sometimes doubt, but He always upholds them. - We will never know truth by seeing it; rather by only trusting in divine revelation. - Our evaluation of all things is incomplete without holding it up to the backdrop of eternity. - Meeting regularly to worship God in His sanctuary (church) produces clarity in the battle between truth and lie. - Envy is a temptation that is disarmed by being satisfied in the Lord. - Because God truly is good to His people.

Three Components that Produce a Longing for God 1. Love for God comes by first receiving His love for us. - David first received loving kindness from God. 2. Love for God comes by removing all other “gods”. - In the wilderness, David’s love for God was revealed, tested and strengthened. 3. Love for God comes from a confident hope for the future. - David looked ahead to what he knew would happen.

Verse 2 - David recognizes: “You, LORD are my Master.” “I am the Your servant.”

Verse 2 - David recognizes: “The LORD is all-sufficient within Himself. Plus, I have no good of which I could bring to Him.” “I petition Him only because of His loving kindness. I cannot give Him anything in exchange to earn it.” This is grace through faith alone.

Verse 3 - David recognizes: While the LORD is all-sufficient, He loves His people. He does delight in His people. “I also love, serve and delight in His people.”

Verse 4 - David recognizes: “There is only one God who is worthy of my worship. You alone have power to grant my request. In You alone is joy.” “I will not turn to any other.”
